Knitted Shawl Construction
The mesh pattern creates tiny lace eyelets that allow air to flow through, providing ventilation. A perfect addition to my Summer Knit Series, the lightweight cotton yarn adds to the breathability for maximum comfort.
- Shawl Texture Design: The Mesh Lace Knitting Pattern easily creates a light and airy texture for this shawl pattern.
- Intermediate Level: The entire shawl is easily created with a simple combination of knits and purls, along with increase and decrease stitches.
- Shape: A triangular shape.
- Size: 60 width x 30 inches height (152 x 76 cm)
- Row Repeats: Knit up this lace texture in an 4-row repeat.
- Bottom Up: The knitted shawl is created from the bottom up knitted flat on a long circular needle.
- One Piece and Worked Flat: Knitted flat on one long circular needle for length.
- Lays Flat: The lace eyelets are within a garter stitch, allowing it to easily lay flat.
- Reversible: This is a reversible pattern because the design is displayed equally on both the right and wrong sides of the work.

- Size 10 US (6.0 mm) – Circular 36″ in length

Yarn
- Weight: Worsted #4
- Yardage: 350 yards (320 m)
- Fiber: Cotton/Acrylic blend, or any fiber of your choice
- Suggested Yarn: Shawl sample knitted with Caron Cotton Cakes Self-Striping (in color Beachglass). It is a cotton 60% and Acrylic (40%) blend. One ball is more than adequate at 250 g / 530 yards / 485 m. This yarn is also available at most big box craft shops like Michaels.
Knitting Techniques

Gauge + Size Modifications
Knitting Gauge in Mesh Lace Stitch Pattern
4″ x 4″ (10 x 10 cm) = 15 stitches and 7.5 rows
To Knit a Gauge Swatch in Mesh Lace, Cast On An Even Number of Stitches
- Row 1 (right side): K1, * YO, K2TOG *, K1
- Row 2 (wrong side): Knit All
- Row 3: K1, * K2TOG, YO *, K1
- Row 4: Knit All
- If you wish to knit with different yarn weights, select a needle size about 3 sizes bigger than the yarn’s recommendation.
- You may modify its size by continuing to increase until it is the width you wish for your shawl.
Shawl Knitting Instructions
Step 1: Cast On
Cast On three stitches onto your needle.
Step 2: Set-Up Rows
Begin knitting the bottom tip of your shawl with the following 6 rows.
When knitting flat on a long circular needle for your project’s length, begin by holding the “empty” needle in your dominant hand (right for right-handers, left for left-handers) while knitting from the needle with the yarn tail in your non-dominant hand.
- Row 1: K3 (3 sts)
- Row 2: K3
- Row 3: K1, YO, K1, YO, K1 (5 sts)
- Row 4: K5
- Row 5: K1, YO, K1, pm, K1, pm, K1, YO, K1 (7 sts)
- Row 6: K7
Step 3: Mesh Lace Stitch (4-Row Repeat)
- Row 1: K1, YO, * K2TOG, YO * to marker, sm, K1, sm, * YO, SSK * to last 1 sts, YO, K1
- Row 2: Knit All
- Row 3: K1, YO, K1, * YO, K2TOG * to marker, sm, K1, sm, * SSK, YO * to last 2 sts, K1, YO, K1
- Row 4: Knit All
Knit 32 repeats of rows 1 through 4 for a total of 128 rows (in addition to the original 6 set-up rows) and 135 stitches.
Step 4: Bind Off Loosely
This easy Stretchy Bind Off is my favorite knitting technique when we want the edge of a knitted project to be flexible. Find instructions to knit the Stretchy Bind Off.
You may also simply bind off loosely in your favorite technique.
Step 5: Finishing
- Weave In yarn ends
- Wet-Block, pinning to size (recommended, but optional)
