Mavericks Wave Ripple Knitted Blanket Pattern
Mavericks Wave Ripple Knitted Blanket Pattern is a beautiful light and airy ripple design offered in six sizes with alternating shades of colors.
Its Ripple Ridge Lace stitch easily creates a beautiful and graceful texture. Similar to a vintage feather and fan, this old shale stitch variation includes an added structure with garter ridges between each of the lacy rows.

Knitted Blanket Construction
My inspiration for this ocean wave design is Mavericks Beach, the famous surfing spot visible from my knitting studio in Half Moon Bay, California. It’s a popular destination for experienced big-wave surfers during the winter months when waves can top out at over 60 ft (18 m). Check out the recent Mavericks Surf award nominee videos!
- Blanket Texture Design: The Ripple Ridge Lace Knitting Pattern easily creates a beautiful and graceful texture for this blanket pattern. Similar to a vintage feather and fan, this stitch variation includes an added structure with garter ridges between each of the lacy rows.
- Intermediate Level: The entire blanket is easily created with a simple combination of knits and purls, along with increase and decrease stitches.
- Row Repeat: Knit up this lace texture in an 8-row repeat.
- Blanket Border: The Garter Stitch borders the top and bottom of the blanket pattern.
- Lays Flat: Although the lace eyelets are within a stockinette texture, the garter stitch ridges give it more structure, allowing it to easily lay flat.
- Bottom Up: The knitted blanket is created from the bottom up knitted flat on a long circular needle.
- Shape: A square/rectangular shape.
- Not Reversible: This is not a reversible pattern because the right side of the work displays the design, but the wrong (back) side does not.

Blanket Knitting Instructions
Step 1: Cast On
Cast On the number of stitches for the blanket size you’ve selected (see sizes above).
___
Step 2: Bottom Border
Begin knitting the bottom border in the easy Garter Stitch.
When knitting flat on a long circular needle for your project’s length, begin by holding the “empty” needle in your dominant hand (right for right-handers, left for left-handers) while knitting from the needle with the yarn tail in your non-dominant hand.
Rows 1 – 6: Knit All
___
Step 3: Blanket Body in Ripple Ridge Stitch
To best keep track of your stitches, it is highly recommended to place stitch markers. I simply use a little scrap yarn and place them to mark off the 13 stitch repeats. Doing so allows us to easily keep track of our stitches while knitting row-by-row.
- Row 1 (rs): Knit All
- Row 2 (ws): Knit All
- Row 3: Knit All
- Row 4: Purl All
- Row 5: * K4, (YO, K1) 5 times, YO, K4 *
For each multiple, you will have increased six stitches from 13 to 19. - Row 6: Purl All
- Row 7: * (K2TOG) 3 times, K7, (SSK) 3 times *
For each multiple, you will have decreased six stitches to the original 13. - Row 8: Knit All
Repeat Rows 1 – 8 of the Ripple Ridge Stitch until your blanket is the length you desire. See the number of pattern repeats required in the above Blanket Sizes section.
___

Knit top border of blanket in the Garter Stitch.
Rows 1 – 8: Knit All
___
Step 5: Finishing
- Cast Off all stitches loosely
- Weave In yarn ends
- Wet-Block (recommended, but optional)
Blanket Modifications
- If you wish to knit with different yarn weights, select a needle size slightly bigger than the yarn’s recommendation.
