Long Raindrops Knit Cowl Scarf
This Long Raindrops Knit Cowl Scarf is a reversible knit and purl design that is great for beginners. It’s an easy-to-memorize eight-row repeat pattern that is knitted in-the-round on circular needles.
You may also customize this design with different yarn colors or create a longer wrap-around infinity scarf.

Knitted Scarf Sizes and Construction
3 Sizes:
- Short Cowl One-Color: 12 x 24 inches (30 x 61 cm)
- Short Cowl Two-Color: 13 x 24 inches (33 x 61 cm)
- Long Infinity Scarf: 8 x 60 inches (20 x 152 cm)
Texture Design: This Long Raindrops knit stitch pattern creates elongated, vertical lines resembling a rainy downpour. This pattern is created by knitting rows of four alternating 1×1 rib stitch pattern.
Beginner Level: The scarf is easily created with a simple combination of knits and purls.
Easy Knit + Purls: This scarf texture is included in my Knit Stitch Pattern Book, available in both printed and E-book formats worldwide.
Shape: A rounded cylindrical shape.
Bottom Up: The scarf is created from the bottom up knitted in-the-round on a circular knitting needle.
Reversible: This is a reversible pattern, so the texture is visible and looks great on both the right and wrong sides of your work.

When choosing yarn, I like the warmth and quality of a natural wool fiber that can be easily washed. As a result, my cowl samples were knit in Cascade 128 Superwash Merino Wool in colors:
- Feather Grey 875 (beige grey)
- Pacific 1960 (dark blue)
- Summer Sky Heather 1910 (light blue)

Yarn Weight Substitution
If you prefer to knit with worsted weight #4 yarn, you may follow this pattern by knitting double-stranded to achieve the same bulky gauge.
Scarf Knitting Instructions
Knitting Gauge in Long Raindrops Pattern
4″ x 4″ (10 x 10 cm) = 14 stitches x 18 rows
Step 1: Cast On Stitches
Short Cowl (both one-color, or multi): 84 stitches.
Long Infinity Scarf: 210 stitches.
Step 2: Knit Body in Long Raindrops Stitch
Short Cowl (one color): Knit 6 pattern repeats for a total of 48 rows.
Short Cowl (multi-color): To change yarn colors, add one additional knit stitch row in your new color before repeating the stitch pattern. Knit 6 pattern repeats for a total of 53 rows.
Long Infinity Scarf: Knit 4 pattern repeats for a total of 32 rows.
Long Raindrops Stitch:
- Row 1: * K1, P1 *
- Row 2: * K1, P1 *
- Row 3: * K1, P1 *
- Row 4: * K1, P1 *
- Row 5: * P1, K1 *
- Row 6: * P1, K1 *
- Row 7: * P1, K1 *
- Row 8: * P1, K1 *
Step 3: Cast Off and Finish
- Cast Off all stitches;
- Weave in your yarn ends;

- My scarf sample was knit in Cascade 128 Superwash Merino Wool in the beige color Feather Grey 875, which required 2 skeins total.

Instructions

Cast On 84 Stitches onto your straight knitting needles.

Repeat rows 1 - 8. Knit 6 Row Repeats for a total of 48 rows of the Long Raindrops Stitch, or until your cowl is the height you desire.
